Abstract :
In this paper, we consider a primary user equipped with a cognitive-enabled radio device and further equipped with an energy harvester with a finite capacity battery. The primary user has highest priority to access a primary channel whereas at the same time tunes the cognitive radio to sense and access to another primary channel if more throughput is needed. At the beginning of each time slot, the primary user, aiming at maximizing its expected throughput, estimates available energy to take an optimal action from a set of possible actions: sleeping, spectrum sensing and/or accessing, and transmitting. The problem is formulated as a Markov decision process. The simulation results illustrate the throughput of an energy harvesting primary user with/without considering the future expected throughput.
