Abstract :
An approach to the conceptual design of next-generation telescopes is proposed using parameterized models to explore the design space. A parameterized model of an advanced space telescope concept has been created as a tool for evaluating spacecraft architectures and for identifying which combinations of advanced technologies best meet mission requirements. The model can be used to generate multiple unique realizations of a system based on the selection of several high-level design variables. For any set of design variables, a structural finite element model is automatically generated in MATLAB, and analyzed using NASTRAN. Following this, a complete dynamic analysis is performed on the system, outputting performance and system metrics. The initial model compares two aperture configurations. The vehicle dimensions, property parameters and finite element mesh fidelity can all be varied over the course of a trade space analysis. The modular form of the model allows new or updated components to be added to the system for even larger architecture surveys. A trade space analysis is run by varying key variables in the design space, and the superior architectures from over 1500 spacecraft realizations are identified
