Abstract :
Summary form only given as follows. This presentation discusses the application of communication standards and protocols to facilitate data exchange in the substation environment. It includes the history of substation communications including the use of legacy protocols for transmission of SCADA data to EMS systems. The introduction of IED (intelligent electronic devices) and their impact on the substation communication architecture and applications is mentioned. These applications include protection, control and metering of the utility substation and transmission line assets. Communication media like copper, optical fiber and radio are covered. The presentation concludes with Ethernet applications and other trends in the future of substation communications.
