Abstract
Summary form only given. The Smith-Purcell free electron laser (SP-FEL) is a potentially compact cw source of tunable mW THz radiation. To achieve this potential, the gain mechanism of the electron beam-electromagnetic wave interaction must be well understood. We report that the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) behavior in the vicinity of the lasing threshold provides an important clue in this pursuit.
