Abstract :
Summary form only given. A low energy electron beam, propagating across beat-wave excited relativistic plasma waves, can be focused to a line, which is along the wave propagation direction, as shown in past numerical simulations. Recent simulations extend the study to relativistic electron beams, include the effects of magnetic fields, and include other methods for exciting plasma wake-fields. Included is a study of the radiation emitted by the electrons as they propagate across, and are focused by, the plasma wave and laser fields. The results of studies comparing the focusing of electrons that co-propagate with the plasma waves and laser beams are included. These studies relate to the use of an electron beam as a diagnostics for plasma wave accelerators by observing the resulting distortion of, and radiation emitted by, the electron beam due to its interaction with the plasma waves.
