Provides a detailed analysis of direct detection lightwave systems employing an optical preamplifier at the receiver. The modulation format is on-off-keying (OOK). The authors take into account the optical amplifier noise, the post-detection receiver noise, the shot noise, and the impact of nonzero laser linewidth
