Abstract :
Summary form only given. Raman amplification (RA) with multiple pump wavelengths allows broadband amplification. Gain flattening over the entire signal band is required in ultra-long-haul (ULH) dense wavelength division multiplexed (DWDM) transmissions. Peak-to-peak gain ripple of <0.5 dB can be obtained. To fully take the advantage of RA in ULH DWDM dispersion-managed transmissions, span fibers can be bi-directionally pumped and dispersion-compensating fibers (DCF) backward pumped.
