Abstract
Recently, many technical challenges of the microgrid, such as operation stability, energy management and relay protection, need to be met with the development of the smart gird. Protection is one of the most significant problems. In this paper, the issues related to the protection of microgrid are discussed at first. Thus, after comparing the existing microgrid protection methods, the ideal structure and parameters of the study microgrid are given. Moreover, this paper presents a new protection strategy, which adaptively selects the different fault detection methods in the grid-connected mode and islanded mode of operation. Finally, the selectivity and reliability of the microgrid protection are improved by utilization of this new protection strategy.
