Abstract :
Environmental concerns have driven policy changes and consequently Ontario has aimed to eliminate coal-fired plants. In order to replace energy from coal-fired plants and incentivize growth of renewable energy supply, the Feed-in Tariff (FIT) program was introduced in Ontario under the Green Energy Act 2009. FIT is a market mechanism that promotes new renewable energy sources. The FIT sets out rules and offers a guaranteed pricing schedule to the investor for supplying electric energy from renewable energy sources. The ambitious program aims to alleviate environmental concerns and offers a great opportunity for creating cleaner and greener environment for the society. This paper surveys the contents of the FIT program and analyzes the pricing structure in the context of Ontario´s present and future energy supply.
