Abstract :
A common method of transmitting power from an electric motor to the driven unit is through the use of belts. Advantages of belt drives include minimal maintenance and lubrication requirements, smoothing of sudden shock loads, and quietness. In general, belting systems are less expensive than most other power transmission systems, and offer the flexibility to vary the speed of the driven load without altering the driver speed by simply replacing the sheave(s). This paper discusses the variety of belting systems which are in common use today, their design considerations, proper belt tension, how these belt systems affect the motor and driven unit, and how to properly specify, apply and install belting systems to attain a long and satisfactory life.
