Abstract :
Mobile communication is in ever expanding demand. To cater for the rapid increase in the number of users, the overall capacity of the service must be increased. A very important component of any mobile communication system is the base station antenna. In this work, a single element patch antenna was designed using the ACP technique, operating at 1.8 GHz, which gave a bandwidth of approximately 16% at a VSWR of 2.0. This single element has been incorporated into four element linear arrays. The arrays used a corporate feed network and resulted in a bandwidth of approximately 16% for a 10 dB return loss. Dual polarisation was also implemented in a single element patch antenna to increase the system capacity. A technique based on the maximum and minimum current on a transmission line was used to increase port isolation resulting in -40 dB isolation
