Abstract
This work deals with a time-resolved study of the avalanche and streamer formation phases leading to breakdown in atmospheric nitrogen and dry air. We present the results obtained from experiments and two-dimensional model simulations. It is shown what processes are responsible for the formation of a cathode directed streamer. The trends of externally measured quantities correspond with those predicted by our model
