Abstract :
Summary form only given. We report the first observation of a subpsec THz pulse propagating as a superposition of WGM modes of a dielectric cylinder. Unlike other WGM-related studies that use a single frequency cw laser as the coupling source, we use subpsec THz pulses generated by a photoconductively switched coplanar stripline. Consequently, the coupled WGM pulse covers a continuous frequency range from 0.4 THz to 1.8 THz and consists of a superposition of several WGM modes. The WGM-THz pulses are coupled into and out of a silicon cylindrical cavity via a slab waveguide, and plano-cylindrical lenses are used to couple the energy into and out of the slab guide. Coupled-mode equations are used to analyze the coupling structure.
