Abstract :
MBARI has completed the development of the new remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Tiburon. This vehicle was conceived of and specified by MBARI´s science staff along with external science and engineering input, which at the time was unique. Reviewers from various institutions modified the specifications and systems concept for this custom-built ROV. Tiburon is tightly integrated with MBARI´s SWATH vessel, R/V Western Flyer, and the entire system has been undergoing engineering tests while also performing science missions. The tests are nearly completed and science missions have been expanded over the last year. The original specification for Tiburon and the RN Western Flyer are compared to the original specification. Application of specific technology implementations towards accomplishing the specification goals is discussed. Conclusions are drawn relative to the effectiveness of the chosen solutions. Future efforts for the system are also mentioned
