Abstract :
In traditional building automation networks gateways are responsible for converting data and services between different network technologies. In contrast to routers, which connect network segments of different physical layers, gateways might interconnect entirely different protocol stacks. Such gateways can become very complex and expensive in configuration, operation, and especially maintenance. By implementing multi-protocol support within the field devices themselves, the drawbacks of gateways are reduced. Hence, it is possible to directly access the application on the field devices via various protocols.
