Abstract
Summary form only given. The electrodeless microwave lamps have appeared about 20 years ago. Their operation is based on the gas discharge in the microwave electromagnetic field. The lack of the electrodes inside a bulb of the lamp allows to increase its life. However, up to now the electrodeless microwave lamps in all their advantages do not become commercially attractive for the lighting market. This is primarily associated with a complex design of the lighting device, as well as with a requirement of decreasing the thermal load.
