Abstract
A new type of piezoelectric gripper combined with a Smooth Impact Drive Mechanism (SIDM) is proposed. The gripper consists of four piezoelectric bimorph actuators and L-shaped brass tips. It is shown that the prototype gripper generates forces up to 400 mN. A total opening/closing tip displacement of plusmn200 mum is observed for an applied voltage of plusmn800 V. The use of SIDM with applications of deformed sawtooth waves allowed linear motions of the handling objects. The objects can be linearly moved forward and backward at the maximum speed of 1.2 mm/sec and 18 mm/sec, respectively. It is also shown that the gripper is capable of rotating a columnar object with the SIDM.
