Abstract
The paper discusses the power management design of multi-wavelength optical transparent networks. A node isolation principle is identified to be a key requirement. Two basic network power management strategies, using active gain controlled and loss controlled equalisations respectively, are analysed and modelled based on a multi-wavelength transport network example and it is established that the loss controlled method is superior. The effects of varied signal bit-rate, network node component losses are also modelled for this scheme. Design guidelines obtained from the present work are believed to be of general applicability to other generic multi-wavelength optical cross-connect networks
