Abstract
A study of electric fields in internal defibrillation is conducted to determine optimum configurations for energy delivery. A three-dimensional model of the heart is constructed from 1473 cubic elements. The electric field is determined by finite-element analysis. Three electrode configurations (patch-patch, catheter-patch, and catheter-catheter) are evaluated. The simulations show that (1) the patch-patch configurations best delivers energy to the myocardium, and (2) electrode placement and size have minimal effect on the total energy delivered to the myocardium, and (3) nonuniform distributions and high current concentrations and edge effects are nevertheless observed
