As an important component of language programs, formative evaluation is a type of evaluation which has the purpose of improving teaching and learning through providing teachers and learners with immediate and effective feedback. Firstly, the article presents problems of the implementation of current formative evaluation in college English teaching. Then it introduces a case study of comparing two different forms of formative evaluation. Finally it analyzes the effects of formative evaluation on teaching and non-English majors´ self-directed learning.
