Abstract :
Many techniques exist for producing a high-voltage pulse from the output of a capacitor bank. Apart from Marxing, the use of a transformer with an exploding foil opening switch is probably the most common, although very short rise times are difficult to achieve by this means. In addition, the high-voltage transformer that is needed is bulky, although a static version of a dynamic transformer having a single-turn primary and energised through a conditioning system can be envisaged. The paper describes a scheme in which a capacitor driven flux compression system is used together with a high field dynamic transformer, to generate pulses having a very short rise time. In an independent proposal, a similar approach, but using plasma liners to compress the magnetic field, was termed a magnetic voltage pulser
