Abstract :
A new searching algorithm, reference neighbourhood search (RNS), is proposed to improve the decoding time so that only a small number of distance calculations are needed to locate the closest codeword in a codebook and, at the same time, preserve a good image quality. The performance of RNS in simulated known data models and practical images is discussed and analyzed. It is found that the proposed algorithm gives a good trade-off on both efficiency and effectiveness in image coding
