  • Abstract
The establishment of robotic outposts will be needed as the first step in deploying permanent science stations, infrastructure development or site preparation for subsequent manned missions. Each one of these efforts will require autonomous robotic repair or construction. An effort to develop a self-engaging connector system allowing cable to cable and cable to vehicle or equipment was undertaken. The connector system must be rugged to withstand launch, travel through space, withstand a planetary landing and finally survive the harsh environment of another planet. And when needed the connector must function without failure during a repair/replacement or reconfiguration operation. The first generation multifunctional engagement system is the first step in providing a connector system that meets the demanding requirements for Martian surface exploration and for the on-orbit assembly/repair of spacecraft.
