Abstract
This paper describes an overview of the ongoing work at the University of Wisconsin concerned with power electronics and electric machinery as related to next generation ship propulsion and aircraft launch. While more than a half dozen projects have been completed for the naval applications in recent years, three topics have been selected to illustrate the wide scope of the activity. These subjects encompass a superconducting synchronous motor drive system, a new prototype multilevel inverter power distribution system and a study of linear motor alternatives for aircraft launch.
