Abstract
A mechanical model of flexible cables is presented and is used to investigate the influence of cable swings on the electrical parameters of the flexible cable system. In the secondary circuit of an electric arc furnace, the flexible cables represent an important element whose reactance can be up to 75% of the total secondary circuit reactance. The swing of flexible cables due to electromagnetic forces has an essential contribution to the low frequency oscillations of currents and input power. The method of simulation and simulation results using the model are discussed. It is shown that the contribution of the cable swings to the low frequency oscillations of currents and input power is relatively small.<>
