Abstract :
PROMISE is a development project within the EU DRIVE framework, which aims to develop and test a pan-European multi-modal traveller information system incorporating an open architecture and portable terminals supported by mobile communications bearers. The PROMISE system will eventually provide a wide range of multi-modal traveller information services to the public, such as traffic information and hazard warning; public transport information; parking availability information; and even tourist and visitor information. As PROMISE is developing prototype portable terminals, the user will be able to access a range of information systems when required. Current work in PROMISE is focusing on the development of hardware and software for implementation at pilot sites in Gothenburg and Birmingham in 1994. The paper focuses on the activities involved in this development work and also the implementation and operation at the two pilot sites. Pilot operations are on schedule to commence early in 1994 in Gothenburg and in the summer of 1994 in Birmingham. A comprehensive evaluation plan is being developed to fully assess these pilots and contribute toward future system evolution
