Abstract :
In order to deploy commercial code division multiple access (CDMA) systems, effective system design techniques must be developed. We critically examine the design of a 5 cell pre-commercial CDMA system in Bellevue, Washington, USA. The design aspects that are considered include coverage, capacity, interference, propagation effects, and other relevant system engineering issues. The initial assumptions, and discussed. A test plan to examine the basic operation of the CDMA system and understand critical system tradeoffs is presented. Preliminary results which have been obtained from a pre-commercial deployment are reported. Finally, a summary of current and future field testing activity is presented
