            Abstract :
The paper outlines the concept of a GSM-based communication system for high-speed trains up to 500 km/h. Special services for the railroad operator as specified by the UIC Radio Group are provided. Passenger communication using standard GSM terminals is supported. A possible architecture for the communication system is presented and discussed. Similarities and modifications necessary to existing GSM equipment are highlighted
