            Abstract : 
A model for the modal birefringence of stressed buried-core waveguides is presented. The model comprises analytical solutions to the stress distribution and numerical solutions to the field distribution and form birefringence, the latter performed on the stress-free waveguide structure. It is shown that the model agrees well with finite-element calculations.
