Abstract :
The concept of all-optical networks is not a dream. It is just too early to deploy them. Ultimately, say in 2003 or 2004, a combination of different factors like traffic volumes, exhaustion of existing DWDM terabit systems, system´s integration and technology developments will justify a pure wavelength switched network. Wavelength switching in the future? Why not really cut costs using switches around the core that flip whole fibers and keep wavelengths all together? In the end, the ones to deploy real services that are scalable, supportable, manageable and marketable at realistic prices are the winners and the answer lies in a blend of the old AND the new.
