Abstract :
This report describes the plan of action for the implementation of a water supply system and an evaluation of the current status of sanitation systems in the villages of Tshapasha and Tshibvumo in Limpopo, South Africa. Previous work related to the Water and Health in Limpopo (WHIL) project has included the construction of a slow-sand filter in Tshapasha and design of a sustainable water supply scheme for both villages. Given the current state of water and sanitation (WASAN) infrastructure in both villages, this report outlines the goals and objectives for the WASAN components of the project for the 2012 trip. Primary objectives include connecting the slow-sand filter and expanding the distribution system in Tshapasha, designing and implementing an initial water supply system in Tshibvumo, analyzing pit latrine and waste disposal sites in both villages, and establishing an apprenticeship program for community participants to build capacity. The report describes analyses of alternatives of source location and storage method in Tshibvumo, provides a preliminary plan for the operator apprenticeship curriculum for both communities. Lastly, a work plan is introduced for the team to follow during implementation from June-August 2012.
