Abstract
The use of the utility communications architecture (UCA) in distribution automation projects has shown to be an effective method of reducing the cost of integration of equipment from different vendors. Furthermore, the protocols specified by UCA offer enhanced functionality not previously seen in the utility automation environment. The authors discuss the use of SCADA systems, DAIS (Database Access and Integration Services) and the Manufacturing Message Specification
