Abstract :
Several agriculturally related electrical codes and standards have been developed to maintain or improve the safety and efficiency of agricultural applications as the depth and breadth of electrical uses expanded. The codes and standards in place today provide excellent guidance for selection, control, and proper wiring of electrical equipment in new or reworked installations. This paper reviews and discusses the most common electrical codes and standards that apply to agriculture. Professional organizations that developed most of these standards and codes include ASAE (The Society for Engineering in Agricultural Food and Biological Systems), IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers) and NFPA (The National Fire Protection Association). The NFPA develops the National Electrical Code (NEC). National organizations that have publications such as handbooks, textbooks, and technical papers to discuss applications of these codes and standards include the ASAE, IEEE, NFEC (National Food and Energy Council), MWPS, (Midwest Plan Service) and AAVIM (American Association for Vocational Instructional Materials). In addition many state agencies such as Cooperative Extension, and State Electrical Councils have developed their own publications to promote safe and efficient use of electricity in rural applications
