Abstract
In this paper, our analytical treatment of the VIPA reveals many interesting features: 1. Intensity modulation over wavelength; 2. Potential satellite peaks within each subband; 3. Small variation of diffraction efficiency for different sub-bands. This formulation is very general and useful. Further analysis shows the inherent dispersion provided by VIPA and the shape of the diffraction beam in the real space. Through them, one can optimize the optical design for best efficiency.
