Abstract :
A pulsed power modulator to be used as a magnetron driver was designed, assembled and tested. The modulator setup consists basically of a 9 kV dc high voltage power supply, a resonant charging circuit, a 14 Omega and 2 mus pulse forming network, and a high voltage pulse, pulse-transformer. The pulse transformer secondary circuit provides a high voltage pulse of 40 kV to the magnetron cathode. Initially, the modulator tests were conducted using a conventional hydrogen thyratron as switching device. Then the thyratron was replaced by an IGBT module switch in order to compare the electric behavior of both switches. Finally, the paper describes not only the electric performance of two modulator circuits using the voltage and current pulse waveforms, but also it discusses some details of IGBT module gate drive circuit.
