Abstract :
AWE´s EROS facility has recently been used to develop low-impedance, pinched electron beam diodes for flash radiography. Unfortunately the relatively slow output voltage risetime and the collapsing impedance of the diode results in significant reduction in diode performance. The 2-4 MV oil switch in the folded Blumlein geometry was assumed to dominate the risetime and has been characterized and compared with experimental data. A reduction in the switch inductance, driven by the 8 Ohm impedance of the switched line, by more than 300 nH is required. Options for new switch configurations are described and modelled. The choice for down selection of the viable design refers to performance of existing and future radiographic machines at AWE and also on the delay imposed by its installation.
