Abstract
The group in Glasgow have studied the performance of electrically powered equipment both in treatment situations in hospitals and in clinical laboratories when the equipment is subjected to electrical mains disturbances. For certain life-critical systems and analytical installations where security of data is vital, a regular cessation of operation is unacceptable and the use of an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) is indicated. Examples of such situations are a cardiac intensive care unit or an emergency clinical chemistry analyser
