Abstract :
Technologies for 40 Gbit/s-based unrepeatered WDM transmission are reviewed. The use of ultra-low-nonlinear fiber, low-noise Raman amplifier and optical signal band limitation is shown to be very effective for capacity and distance expansion. With the help of strong FEC technologies, we believe that multi-terabit unrepeatered capacity will be attainable over 300-400 km using 40 Gbit/s WDM signals in the near future.
