Abstract :
In a 40 Gb/s soliton transmission system using lumped EDFAs, we were able to transmit data over 6400 km with low error rates. However, this required placement of the amplifiers (spaced approximately 26 km apart) to within 300 m making this implementation impractical for commercial systems. We report on overcoming this sensitivity by the replacement of the lumped amplifiers in the system with distributed Raman amplification.
