We discuss the physics of collective instabilities in particle beams, and consider one particular case: the free-electron laser (FEL) collective instability. We present a review of the main characteristics of this instability, and its application to the development of Self Amplified Spontaneous Emission (SASE) FELs from the infrared to the X-ray region
