Abstract
Dynamic rate adaptation for streaming media is a key technology of multimedia communication in mobile networks. Except for the method adopted custom-made private rules with less popularity, the present prevalent ways based on control threshold is easy to result in the rate inaccurately adjusted and based on network bandwidth arises adjustment surging. The method proposed in the paper determines rate-switched direction and predicts undetermined sending-rate in the server by setting threshold and analyzing the parameters in RTCP RR packets and RTCP NADU packets. Relying on multiple rate-switched direction and sending-rate, together with the current usable bandwidth computed through the parameters in RTCP RR packets, the decision-maker gets the final sending-rate and rate-switched direction. Experiment results show that the benefits of this method are anti-surging, bandwidth prediction, responding to network diversification rapidly and controlling overflow and underflow of buffer effectively
