Abstract :
A methodology for comparing biosensors is discussed. Novel schemes are identified and compared with well-known concepts. Major sources of uncertainty are identified The biochemical process is characterized by quantum efficiency. The methodology is applied to evanescent wave based sensing devices, to surface plasmon devices, and to mechanically oscillating systems. A figure of merit is given in terms of the lowest change in a biologically active substance that can be detected.
