Abstract :
Design and construction costs of oil production platforms or remote site installations can be greatly affected when consideration is given to possible repair and removal of large rotating equipment from the site. Development of an onsite rewind process that offers the benefits of vacuum pressure impregnation (VPI) coils has offered the designer or site manager alternatives to complete removal of failed equipment. This paper describes the cost considerations of onsite repair and details the process involved in performing an actual offshore rewind. The results of voltage endurance tests and dissipation factor tests are provided to support the ability to meet OEM´s specifications. Logistics of the rewind and a time line of an actual repair show the effectiveness of the process. The discussions in this paper address considerations for an offshore production platform; however, similar considerations apply to any remote site
