  • Abstract
The authors explain the basic details of the MAC/packet family of systems adopted for all high power satellite broadcasting in Europe and the details of the D-MAC/packet member of the family and why it was chosen in the United Kingdom. In particular, the author describes some of the major technical and commercial benefits, with emphasis on the capability of the MAC-packet system to be used in the future for extended and high definition television (EDTV and HDTV) in a manner compatible with all the MAC packet receivers existing at the time of introduction of the new services
