Abstract
Two standards, 802.11i and WAPI, for security of WLAN are introduced, and some shortcomings of them are pointed out. Based on hash chains technique, a new authentication and key management scheme for WLAN is proposed, which achieves authenticating the main entity STA in the foremost time and negotiating and refreshing session keys efficiently. Properties of the proposed scheme are discussed, including security, efficiency and feasibility etc. Compared with 802.11i and WAPI, the proposed scheme not only improves efficiency by reducing computation and communication of protocols, but also promotes security property - availability - by mitigating DoS attacks to AP and AS
