Abstract :
This paper describes a high-resolution position sensing system designed for use in emerging automotive applications such as electronic power steering and starter alternators. This new resolver position sensing system addresses both the cost issue and reliability issues associated with safety critical automotive applications. A variable reluctance resolver design is described. A new resolver to digital converter IC is also described. The paper focuses on the system functions and fault detection features added specifically for the application.
