Abstract :
The use of electrical stimulation as a therapeutic measure in the control of muscular function (and in specific cases of paralysis) has been of varying degrees of success. The main reason is that the human body has to be considered as a highly complex nonlinear system. Many engineers and scientists have attempted to create a closed loop controller for sections of this system. This research focuses on the simulation of the musculo-skeletal function of the lower leg, based on the Pendulum Reflex Test data. The developed simulation of the lower leg can then be utilized in the design of new controllers, to be used in the control of Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES). These more intelligent systems will enhance the therapeutic effects of the FES devices
