Abstract :
This paper addresses the application of high energy density, permanent magnet technology to (1) the brushless, axial field, permanent magnet motor, and (2) the integrated electric motor/pump impeller system for underwater applications. Finite element analysis (FEA) and lumped parameter magnetic circuit models were developed and used to calculate the motor parameters and performance characteristics. New compact, efficient, reliable, and quiet underwater systems are attainable due to advances in high energy density permanent magnets, power electronic devices, and power integrated circuit technology
