Abstract :
With 25% of their value in electronics, modern vehicles can already be considered as autonomously intelligent today. For further gains in safety, security and comfort, vehicle makers are connecting their cars to the outside world. After the quest for a killer application has proven to be elusive, the focus is now on platforms that can accommodate personalised mixes of services that evolve during the vehicle´s lifecycle, and that support all relevant communication media (cellular, broadcast, DSRC). A key requirement for such platforms is that they are remotely manageable, with a control centre acting as a middle layer between service centres and end users. Standards need to be agreed for the key interfaces between these entities to help achieve an open, interoperable market. Mobilising the leading companies in the European telematics industry, the EU-funded Global System for Telematics project (GST) has developed a set of proposals for these standards.
