Abstract :
The author analyzes the capacity of fiber distributed data interface (FDDI)-II for handling voice only traffic, multimedia traffic (voice+images of three different quality levels) and video traffic. The author compares the capacity of voice only FDDI-II applications with typical industry products. The analysis of the capacity for multimedia applications is extended to study a tandem ring configuration for supporting wide area traffic distribution. The video capacity analysis includes still and full motion. It is shown that a single-ring FDDI-II can handle 9000 phones or over 2000 multimedia stations or 240 video stations
